Kindness Column: Acts of Kindness at Minnechaug

Anything you can do to brighten another person’s day is worth doing because you never know the impact it may have on them later.

This week at Minnechaug, I asked three students to do one act of kindness at home, in sports, or at school. Whether it’s a compliment, a quick smile, or a friendly hello, small acts of genuine kindness can truly make a difference in someone’s day. Now, let’s take a look at what our peers at Minnechaug did and how it impacted others.

First, I have Selena Nguyen. She chose to perform an act of kindness by buying her friend Chapstick. Selena was going about her day when she remembered her friend talking about how she needed Chapstick. Thinking of her friend, Selena decided to buy it for her. Selena’s friend was thankful and happy for the thoughtful gesture. When people go out of their way to purchase something for a friend, it makes them feel seen and valued, especially when it’s something they need. Even if it’s something as simple as Chapstick, the other person is grateful in the end.

Next, I have Rama Awkal. She went out of her way to compliment her friend on her lashes. “I chose to tell her because I wanted to make her feel more confident!” Rama said. In return, her friend thanked her and felt happy and appreciated. A simple compliment can go a long way in making someone’s day. Rama’s friend felt good about herself, and Rama completed a kind act without it even feeling like a task. Friendships can be wonderful, and even a small compliment can be a sweet way to make a friend feel valued.

Lastly, I have Brynn DeForest, who performed a kind act for her brother.

“I bought my brother a Starbucks drink and surprised him with it because he was feeling a bit sad. He got really excited and happy because it was one of his favorite drinks. I felt happy that I made him feel better and made his day a little brighter.”

Brynn’s little brother was very excited by her thoughtful surprise. This simple act of kindness made his day a little better because someone who cares about him was thinking of him. Not only was it a treat, but it also came from a genuine place of love and care.

In the end, all of these acts of kindness came from a place of genuine thoughtfulness. Whether it was thinking of others, offering a compliment, or purchasing something to brighten someone’s day, each act made a positive impact. It may seem small, but it truly makes a difference.

This week, I encourage you to complete an act of kindness. It could be doing a chore without being asked, complimenting someone’s shirt, or simply helping someone out. Anything you can do to brighten another person’s day is worth doing because you never know the impact it may have on them later.
