Kindness Column: Kind Carnations

Kindness Column: Kind Carnations

Two weeks ago, carnations were distributed to students throughout Minnechaug High School.  These flowers had small notecards attached to them where students could write kind messages and give them to a peer, friend, teacher, family member, or anyone they wanted to make feel valued and special. These carnations were very meaningful, and we are grateful for everyone’s generosity.

Samantha Engel received a carnation, and I asked her to share a brief statement about how she felt when she received it.

“I received the carnation at lunch. A peer in the sophomore class asked if I wanted a carnation, and I replied, ‘Yes!’ It made me feel happy because I felt recognized, and it was so kind of her to give me one!”

Samantha appreciated this kind act and will remember it.

The note on Samantha’s flower said, “You are worthy.” This is a great affirmation to remember when you’re feeling down. Hearing that you are worthy, valued, or special can help you see those qualities in yourself. However, you do not need someone else to tell you these things in order for them to be true. You should believe them because they can reflect who you truly are.

I also received a carnation from a friend. The note attached to it read, “You are awesome.” I appreciated this kind gesture, and it was very sweet of my friend to think of me. I later hugged her and thanked her. Sometimes it really is the little things that count because small acts of kindness are often what we remember when we’re feeling sad.

When I received my carnation, I felt appreciated, awesome—as the note said—and happy. These are just a few words that describe how I felt in that moment.

So, remember, when you are upset, frustrated, or sad, that people do care. You have self-worth, and you have the power to perform kind acts for yourself and others.
