Cruise lines have become a major vacation option since the 1990s, with major companies such as Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Cruise Line rising in popularity. With so much speculation about which cruise line is best, the answer may not be what you think.
For context, I’ve traveled on four different cruise lines, totaling about 12 cruises, and I have a solid understanding of what each has to offer.
However, the reality is not what many people assume.
All cruise lines are good in their own ways, offering benefits that many major vacations cannot match, such as included dining, special excursions, and activity-filled experiences. Ultimately, it all depends on your perspective and what you want from your cruise. Some cruise lines may offer features that others do not, while some provide everything at a higher price. Even so, certain cruise lines have standout qualities that are hard to ignore.
The cruise lines we will be reviewing today are:
Disney Cruise Line
Royal Caribbean
Norwegian Cruise Line
Carnival Cruise Line
To make the review fair, each cruise line will be evaluated in three categories: Overall Welfare, Destinations, and Inclusivity.
- Overall Ranking measures the layout of the ships, service quality, food, and amenities.
- Destinations evaluates where the cruise lines travel and the quality of their excursions.
- Inclusivity examines how welcoming the cruise line is for different groups, whether adults, families, or mixed audiences.
This is not a straightforward ranking. Instead, it is a perspective on what each cruise line does best and which type of traveler it suits most.
Disney Cruise Line
Disney’s first ship launched in 1996, and the cruise line has grown significantly ever since. The company has consistently remained one of the top contenders in the cruise industry. Here’s how it performs.
Overall Ranking
Disney Cruise Line has long been recognized for its exceptional customer service, luxurious atmosphere, and wide variety of food options. Want waffles? How about Mickey-shaped waffles?
Every night, crew members place custom towel animals inspired by Disney characters in your room. Room service is high quality, and staterooms are cleaned twice a day: once in the morning and again while guests are at dinner.
Guests also rotate between different dining rooms each night, allowing them to experience new meals and environments throughout the cruise.
Destinations
Disney Cruise Line sails to popular destinations including the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, and the Mediterranean, with some ships also traveling through the Pacific. Their excursions are generally high-end due to Disney’s strict standards regarding approved experiences.
However, Disney has fewer ships than many competing cruise lines, meaning there are fewer sailing dates and itinerary options available. Disney Cruise Line is also one of the most expensive major cruise lines, making it less affordable for some travelers.
Inclusivity
Disney Cruise Line offers activities and amenities for guests of all ages. Although it is family-oriented, the cruise line’s high level of service and elegant atmosphere attract adults as well.
Disney ships are spacious and filled with activities, reducing the chances of guests becoming bored during the trip. Disney Cruise Line is also one of the only major cruise lines without casinos onboard, helping maintain a family-friendly environment.
Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean is one of the most successful cruise lines in the world and currently holds records for some of the largest cruise ships ever built. Its versatility and wide range of amenities make it a popular choice for many travelers.
Overall Ranking
Royal Caribbean excels in customer service, dining, and overall quality of life onboard. Staterooms are high quality, and guests typically have the same waiters each evening, allowing staff to become familiar with them over time.
Meals change nightly, and events, concerts, and activities take place throughout the day. It is an excellent option for travelers who want to experience a little bit of everything in one vacation.
Destinations
As one of the world’s largest cruise companies, Royal Caribbean travels to a vast number of destinations. Guests can sail to the Bahamas for a weekend getaway, explore the rocky cliffs of Norway, or embark on a multi-week Hawaiian cruise through the Pacific.
Although prices vary, Royal Caribbean is often considered affordable for the value it provides. Many amenities are included, making it a strong option for travelers seeking good value for their money.
Inclusivity
Royal Caribbean ships appeal to guests of all ages. They are suitable for families, couples, and groups alike. However, the onboard experience often depends on the specific ship.
Newer and larger ships tend to cater more toward families, while older and smaller ships are often more appealing to adults and older travelers. Despite these differences, Royal Caribbean consistently provides a wide variety of activities for everyone onboard.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line offers a wide range of amenities, large modern ships, and appealing destinations around the world.
Overall Ranking
Norwegian Cruise Line approaches cruising differently from many competitors. Norwegian allows guests to choose where and when they want to dine, unlike cruise lines that assign fixed dining rooms and schedules.
Room service and customer service are generally excellent, though the cruise line can feel less personal in certain areas. Some ship designs make public areas feel smaller despite the ships’ overall size. Since guests often have different waiters each night, there is less opportunity to build familiarity with the dining staff.
Even so, Norwegian maintains a stylish and elegant atmosphere that competes well with other major cruise lines.
Destinations
Norwegian offers many destinations around the world, though its selection is not quite as extensive as competitors such as Royal Caribbean or Carnival.
Compared to Disney and Royal Caribbean, Norwegian is generally the more affordable option. This can make it appealing for travelers on a budget, shorter cruises, or first-time cruisers.
Inclusivity
Norwegian is somewhat less inclusive for all age groups compared to some competitors. The cruise line tends to cater more toward adults, and while youth clubs and family activities exist, they are often smaller in scale than those found on Disney, Royal Caribbean, or Carnival ships.
Despite the lower price point, fewer activities are fully included. There are more specialty dining options that require additional payment compared to complimentary dining venues. Pool decks are often smaller, and some newer ships focus heavily on one major attraction, such as roller coasters, go-kart tracks, or large water slides. If these attractions close temporarily, a significant portion of onboard entertainment can be affected.
Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival Cruise Line is widely known for appealing to budget-conscious travelers, first-time cruisers, and guests looking for a lively atmosphere.
Overall Ranking
Carnival ships feature simpler designs but still offer a large number of activities, events, and entertainment options. Carnival is often described as a “party cruise line,” which may make it less appealing for travelers seeking a quieter, more relaxing vacation.
The dining experience can vary depending on personal preference. The main dining rooms are generally good, while some specialty dining venues receive stronger reviews. Customer service is solid overall, though it may not match the standards of the other cruise lines on this list.
Staterooms are generally average, with suite accommodations standing out as the most impressive options.
Destinations
Carnival operates many ships of reasonable size and sails to a variety of destinations, though it focuses heavily on the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
Carnival is the most affordable cruise line on this list and is among the cheapest major cruise lines in the world. For example, a suite aboard Carnival for a week may cost significantly less than an ocean-view stateroom aboard Disney for only five days.
Inclusivity
Despite some drawbacks, Carnival remains highly accessible for travelers of all ages, especially younger adults and teenagers traveling with families. The ships offer energetic entertainment and attractions that help distinguish Carnival from its competitors.
Conclusion
There is no definitive answer as to which cruise line is “best.” It ultimately depends on what you want from your vacation.
Are you looking for the lively party atmosphere of Carnival? The elegance and variety of Royal Caribbean? The family-focused experience of Disney? Or the freedom and flexibility offered by Norwegian?
These are all important factors to consider. One noticeable trend among cruise lines is that the more you pay, the more you generally receive in return.
However, overall spending can sometimes balance out. A $5,000 all-inclusive Disney cruise may end up costing a similar amount as a $3,000 Carnival cruise once onboard purchases are added.
One of the best things travelers can do before booking is research extensively and speak with travel advisors to determine which cruise line best matches their expectations and vacation style.
