Between March 5th and March 7th, class council co-advisors Mrs. O’Sullivan and Mrs. Doe chaperoned the 2025 Massachusetts Student Council Spring Conference. Hosted in Hyannis, Massachusetts, the event consisted of a series of workshops to foster leadership in participants from across the state. Space was limited, so council members had to apply and, if chosen, pay $500 to attend the event.
“They do various events to build a sense of community and leadership,” Mrs. O’Sullivan said. “There are workshops on becoming a better leader, and various keynote speakers. One was on changing school culture.”
Other speakers had stories to share as well.
“One was a woman who lost her sister in a car accident on the dangers of speeding, and a guy who’d dropped out of college and eventually started his own business, a recreational center for at-risk youth,” said Lucy Haile, the Class of 2027 Class President, who, in addition to Naomi Griffin and Kadence Illig, got the chance to lead her workshop.
“Students had a picture of a celebrity or meme on their forehead, and the others had to help them guess without directly stating it. It was meant to build communication skills,” said Lucy.
Among the achievements of the class council on the trip was the run into Craigville Beach on Cape Cod, raising $800 for the Special Olympics. Between that contribution and the seventy-five to eighty schools that usually attend, over $110,000 was raised for the cause.
Accolades received by members of the Minnechaug community included a nomination for Massachusetts Student Council Advisor of the Year for Mrs. O’Sullivan. For wins, the Gold Council of Excellence, for which a major portfolio of school events, culture, and participation must be submitted. Finally, a Top Ten Project Award was earned for the Santa Event by District employees and their families.
Festivities were planned for the students in attendance as well. Minnechaug’s student council members won second place in a Lip Sync contest for their routine, a Michael Jackson medley. A dance was also hosted for the students.
